Invigorate your creativity while painting in a serene park setting. We offer Garden Watercolor Picnic workshops in a relaxed, comfortable seating arrangement, painting garden-inspired subjects including flowers, trees, and landscapes.

We will provide:

  • A boho picnic table setup with rug and pillow seating (lawn chairs available upon request)

  • Practice papers, paints, palettes, notebooks, easles, mixing water, and a range of professional brushes

  • Tea or espresso & French macarons

  • An overview of the meditative and insightful qualities of working with watercolors

  • Practice session demonstrating color theory, blending, penwork, and layering

  • Free time to work on an original art piece of your own with our tailored guidance

Our Coastal Watercolor Workshops pay homage to San Diego county’s 70 miles of diverse coastline, including our favorite: Rugged coastlines. Sunset Cliffs, Torrey Pines and Windansea Beach provide some of the best backdrops to paint.

Coastal Watercolor Workshops are more challenging due to winds, dusty/sandy settings and Plein Air painting setups, but it’s worth the effort to create a work of art that encapsulates some of the most sought after views, creating a lasting calming and inspiring impact.

We typically spend 15 minutes on introductions, 30 minutes on practicing, then 60 to 90 minutes on painting an original piece.

Average time spent is roughly 2 hours, and we are open to custom duration requests.

FAQs

  • We love painting with all types of mediums, but watercolors are unique for their meditative benefits while accomplishing beautiful artwork within a 2-hour range allocated for this workshop experience. Learning watercolors allows you to paint pretty much anywhere with a travel kit.

  • Our Garden Painting Picnics primarily take place in Presidio Park in Old Town, San Diego, and in Balboa Park in Downtown San Diego. Park settings are best for beginners because the enviornment is calmer and more relaxing for painting lessons.

  • Upon reserving a Coastal Watercolor Workshop, we will review location options and agree upon a place beforehand. Popular options are Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma, San Diego, as well as Windansea Beach and Torrey Pines, both in La Jolla.

    Locations such as Torrey Pines Natural Reserve are available for private groups, but require advance notice to secure a permit. Permits are easiest to secure: 1) For weekday reservation times or 2) With advance notice of a couple months.

  • The outdoors offer fresh air, the warmth and light of the sun, the shade of trees: A relaxing change of pace from everyday life, and an inspiring setting to paint.

    Painting outside is also the essence of Plein Air painting, which is a French term to describe “painting outdoors.” This style of painting became popular in the French Impressionism movement, emphasizing capturing natural light and sceneries

  • We are so fortunate that San Diego has consistantly beautiful weather, however, rainy and windy days do occasionally occur. In the scenario of poor weather on the forecast we will try to reschedule, or we will be happy to relocate to an indoor setting.

    Refunds are allowed for any reason, up until 24 hours before your painting reservation start time.

  • We understand things can change last minute, so we are happy to offer full refunds up until 24 hours before your painting reservation start time, minus any credit card fees, if applicable. No reasons required.

  • We specialize in helping artists who are just starting out with watercolors, and we are also happy to provide guidance at intermediate levels.

    Garden-style painting picnics are ideal for beginners, and Coastal painting workshops are ideal for individuals with at least some watercolor experience.

    It is acceptable to have no painting experience whatsoever for either painting workshop - we will show you techniques, provide you with tools, and meet you where you are at, to create a work of art that you can feel connected to.
